Long time no see

Sorry this hasn't been updated for a few days but it's been none-stop.

We have spent the last few days in the Cameran Highlands. The weather here is quite a bit cooler and there is more rain, but it is still warm compared to British weather. We have done three treks here. The first trek on Monday took us up and down 2 mountains with us all wearing day sacks. It was tough climbing up the mountains but the descent was less so, although at times it got tricky and slippery. The seconds trek took us past Robinson Falls and along a very challenging trail. A few of us fell but avioded the hugh drop off the side of the walkway. The third and final trek yesterday was by far the most difficult. We all had full packs on and we climbed the highest mountain in the Cameron Highlands. The climb was very steep and seem never ending. Lots of people were desperate for the lunch break at the peak of the mountain. Thankfully the decscent, again, was much easier than the climb.

We've had plenty of good food here in the Cameron Highlands and Stu has had steak and chips every night we've stayed here. Food from the night market on Sunday was also delicious and something much different to normal.

We have stayed in a lovely little hostel called Twin Pines. It has a pretty little garden, serves meals throughout the day and has good rooms and showers. Only downside is the extremely thin walls.

We're travelling to Taman Negara today. To get there we need to get a bus and a boat which we're praying has been organised properly because we're traveling at different times to what is stated in the bus company's leaflet.

Thanks for all your comments so far!

Group Division?

Hey,

We woke up today at 8:30 in order to leave the hotel at 9:30-10:00, however many of us took a long time to get up so we eventually left the hotel at 11:10. Before we left we had cereal and orange juice for breakfast.

For the majority of the day, we split into two teams of seven, but one was instantly reduced to six when Domo had to stay in his room because of a strong migrane. One group went off to the Embassy to hand in the Embassy pack. The other group spent most of their time in the bus station opposite the hotel making phone calls to arrange accomedation and transport for the next week or so.

The two teams reunited at the KL Tower in the Golden Triangle area of the capital city. We had great trouble in ordering food at the highest telecom tower in the world as they almost didn't have anything we ordered from their menu. Funnily enough, it was all the cheap things they didn't have. We managed to haggle them price of the meal down though because of the problems we had and therefore managed to stay with our budget.

We then spent some time back at the hotel before the group headed off to explore the city a bit. We went to see the colonial area of the city, which was incredibly tranquil in comparison to the rest of the city. We also saw the worlds tallest flag pole, where Mr. Riley also managed to catch a gecko.

We then headed to the area called Little India, where they found a small food court. The food was excellent and even those that dislike Indian food found it tastey. Even more remarkable was the price. We were able to buy dinner plus two drinks for 11 people people for just over 11gbp.

We then had a pleasant walk back to the hostel, during which after been told to "wait right there" emma froze still in the middle of the busy road, just as the lights went green. Good one!

Exploring KL

Hi again!

We landed safely in Kuala Lumpur Airport around midday with a much smoother landing than in Qatar. After changing our money we caught the bus to our 'hotel' where we are staying for the next two nights. The rooms are very basic but have bunk beds (with no ladders) - whoo!

We settled down and then went out to find some dinner. We stopped at a local outdoor Chinese where most of us discovered that we're useless at using chopsticks. This cost us just 1.17 GBP each! We then made our way back to our hotel via the night market where we tried some deliciously strange fruit that we purchased for our breakfast tomorrow morning.

We also visited a small Hindu temple which was quite sticky on the feet because we weren't allowed to wear shoes inside.

Tomorrow we have got lots of jobs to do around KL before departing to our first project phase the following day.

Keeping you posted,

Half Way There!

Hi All,

We have just arrived in Doha Airport in Qatar! Our second flight is delayed at the moment but it won't be long before we board.

It has been an eventful day today despite a long flight. We arrived at Heathrow Airport with plenty of time spare, but Jon realised that he had left his passport at the Uni where we stayed for our build up day. This meant that Jon and Mr Riley had to quickly catch a taxi back to the Uni after we had completely searched all of Jon's Bags. Luckily for us all, they managed to find it and get back to the airport in time.

Nothing quite as dramatic has happened since but both our flights so far have been delayed but not for massive amounts of time and we did have a bumpy landing when we touched down here.

However everything else has run smoothly and we're looking forward to Malaysia now after another long flight!

We'll be in touch again soon.

Welcome to our blog!

As you can see, we have changed the website slightly in the build up to our departure to Malaysia. On our homepage you will now find this new blog instead of the usual news which has moved to here.

This is where we will post information to when we are out on the expedition to let you folks know what we're up to.

Please check back often to find out what we're doing but also remember that we will be spending a lot of time in remote areas and won't be able to access a computer with the internet.

If you are familiar with RSS feeds then you can subscribe to blog posts using Atom. Just use the link on the right.

Thank you for visiting and we'll see you soon!
